Undergraduate Degree: Computer Science

What brought you to the MiDAS program?

I have always enjoyed both the technical and artistic side of computers, software, and games. I learned a lot in computer science but felt like I was missing out on the artistic side. If I am going to become a technical artist, I should definitely know both sides of the industry since I will likely be the branch between programmers and artists.

What was your lightbulb moment that took you down this career path?

I don’t think that there was one particular moment. I was told about the program by a friend. I felt like I was not quite ready to leave college without delving more into art. When I learned that the MiDAS program was dealing primarily with VR, a new and emerging medium, I was super excited.

What interactive experience are you looking forward to creating in the near future?

Currently in MiDAS, we’re working towards making a museum piece. My team is going to be making a museum experience where the user is hunting fossils and learning about native Florida species. It’s our hope that it ends up being a permanent exhibit at UF’s natural history museum.

What is your favorite class you’ve taken in your program?

So far, I would have to say our 3D modeling classes with Professor Hyuk. He’s a wonderful professor, and truly cares about his students. He also has a dedication to having us create quality pieces that stand out on our portfolio. Soon in his class, we’re going to be doing more animation, which I am super excited about.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I’m developing a game in my free time. My hope is to be able to sell it as a finished product sometime in the near future.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten?

I would love to be a technical artist at a prominent game company, or a solo developer if my game takes off. I chose a technical artist because it is the best paying technical job within the video game industry, and I love working with shaders, some of the stuff that makes games stick out visually and artistically.

Favorite place you’ve visited?

Sad to say that I actually haven’t been outside of the country yet, although I am getting my passport soon! I hope to go to Europe or Japan. As for where I’ve been, I really loved going to San Francisco in high school. I would love to live out on the west coast some day.
